Washing Hair After Hair Transplant

Having a hair transplant is a great solution to get back your hair and your confidence, too. However, post-event treatment is very important for desirable outcomes to be achieved. When the hair transplant is over, patients ask the most frequently asked question: When can I Wash My Hair Normally After a Hair Transplant?

What is a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant refers to the act of moving the hair follicles of one section of the head to the back of the head. The new follicles transplanted in the procedure are still not very strong, and it takes time to stabilize and start growing. After a hair transplant, wash carefully to ensure scalp healing, graft stability, and the best results.

Best Time to Wash Hair After Hair Transplant.

In general, you can start washing your hair gently two to four days after the procedure. Washing at this stage may also cause damage to the follicles. This may apply too much pressure, which can result in future complications.

Here’s a recommended timeline for washing your hair after hair grafting:

Day 1 to 2: Rest and Avoid Washing

For the first 48 hours after your hair transplant, you shouldn’t even wash your hair at all. Hence, your scalp will still be recovering, and the grafts are relatively delicate at that time.

Day 3 to 7: Gentle Washing Begins

Starting on day 3 or 4, a patient can shower, but must wash their hair just as the doctor instructed.

Here’s how you should approach washing during this early stage:

Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo: The majority of surgeons suggest using baby shampoo or post-transplant shampoo that they often prescribe to their clients.

Apply the shampoo without rubbing: Squeeze a handful of shampoo and put it in your palm, then spread it over your head, using only the tips of your fingers and tapping very lightly. Do not rub or scrub any part of the body with the grafts out of fear of damaging the grafts.

Rinse with lukewarm water: Use a cup or a shower with a very light pour till you wash the hair without putting pressure on the head. Do not cause high water pressure on the affected part since that may trigger the treatment to work again.

Avoid towel-drying: Dry your scalp gently using a clean towel, but do not rub or blow-dry your hair, as this may further lead to more irritation or may even remove the grafts from your scalp.

Week 2: Ease Out Of Normal Washing

During the second week, the patient can return to a normal washing schedule. The scabs that form around the grafts tend to shed off on their own at this stage.  There are always scabs, as it is normally bad to pick them off because they peel off as the skin heals.

Weeks 3 to 4: Resume Normal Hair Care

After three to four weeks, most patients can wash, dry, and style their hair as they normally did before the grafting. You should firmly plant grafts at this time, and your scalp should begin to heal properly.

However, elements such as hair styling equipment, chemical products like dyes, or hairstyles exert pressure on the head.

Avoid sun exposure: Avoid direct sunlight on your scalp for at least the first month after the transplant. Wear a brimmed hat, or avoid going out between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon.

Sleep with your head elevated: For the first three to four days after the surgery, you should try to avoid bending your legs at the hips and keep your head raised on pillows when in bed.

Avoid physical activities: Avoid exercises that involve the use of many muscles and require less energy for at least the first week. Sweating can harm the skin, specifically the scalp part and this will always take time for the wound to heal.

Follow your doctor’s advice: It is essential to listen to what your doctor says because every person reacts differently to wounds and surgeries.
