Why keep a record of personal expenses?

When you file your income tax return on FBR's IRIS portal, you also file a wealth statement. Along with your assets, it asks how much you spent on your household during the tax year, under fixed heads such as rent, electricity, gas, vehicle running, travelling, medical and education. Your wealth at the end of the year should match your wealth at the start, plus your income, minus these expenses. If the numbers do not reconcile, the return can attract questions from FBR.

Most people guess these figures at filing time. If you write each bill and fee here during the year, you will have correct totals for every head when the return is due.

How to use it

  1. Choose Income, Expense or Tax deducted, type the amount, pick the head and how it was paid (cash, bank, JazzCash / Easypaisa).
  2. Add an entry whenever you receive salary or other income, pay a bill or fee, or see tax deducted on a slip or bill. Press Edit next to any entry to correct it. You can attach a photo of the bill or receipt, and open it later from the 📎 icon.
  3. Pick the tax year to see totals. In Pakistan the tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June; for example, tax year 2026 is 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026.
  4. At filing time, press Download tax summary (PDF) and copy the totals into IRIS, or give the file to your tax consultant.

The expense heads

The expense heads in this tool follow the personal expenses section of the wealth statement: rent; rates, taxes and charges; vehicle running and maintenance; travelling; electricity; water; gas; telephone and internet; asset insurance and security; medical; educational; club; functions and gatherings; donations, zakat and similar payments; and other personal or household expenses such as food, clothing and domestic staff. Check the current IRIS form, because FBR sometimes changes the heads.

Need a more detailed head, like "Children's tuition" or "Generator diesel"? Press Add your own head and choose which wealth statement head it counts under (for these examples, Educational and Other personal / household). Your own heads are shown separately, and their amounts are also added to the main head, so your tax summary stays correct.

Tax already deducted (adjustable tax)

Through the year, tax is taken from you in many places: from your salary by your employer, on electricity and phone bills above certain amounts, on profit from bank deposits, on vehicle registration and token tax, and on property purchase. Much of this is "adjustable" and is set off against your final tax in the return, so keep the amounts and the certificates. Record them under Tax deducted and the tool will total them for you.

Zakat and donations

Zakat deducted or paid under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance is deductible from taxable income, and donations to approved institutions can give a tax credit. Enter them as expenses under "Donations, zakat" and keep the receipts.

This tool helps you keep records. It does not calculate your tax and is not tax advice. Rules and rates change every budget; confirm with FBR or a tax consultant before you file.
